The Impact of Positive LGBTQ+ Representation in Media

As the theme for my bachelor's dissertation, I chose to write about the importance of positive LGTBQ+ representation in film and television. For one because it is a subject which is very important and dear to me as a queer person. Secondly because the rise of positive queer representation in media that we have been experiencing the last few years is in jeopardy. The more representation and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals there is in media the more attention and hate they also receive from homophobic and transphobic sectors of society. With the wave of anti-trans rethoric sweeping through the UK and the USA, new bills being signed into laws prohibiting teaching kids about diverse sexualities and identities, and even drag show bans being approved left and right, visibility is more important than ever. Representation is essential for the psychologic well being of queer individuals, especially for vulnerable groups like teenagers who might not have real life role models to help them understand what they are going through.

In my dissertation I analyse the reasons why positive portrayal of minority communities are so important in media and the reasons why they do have real world impact. I throw light into common examples of negative representation and common negative tropes. After which I go into a deep examination of what counts as positive representation. It is not a complete answer as the research into what positive LGBTQ+ representation is supposed to look like is still incomplete and lacking sources. In order to illustrate my theory I dive into an extensive analysis of the Netflix series Heartstopper.

The research into the field of LGBTQ+ individuals in film and media is a subject that deeply interests me. It has also provided me with the skills necessary to assist projects that require a strong voice that is able to analyse the way in which LGBTQ+ representation is being addressed and pinpoint any potential issues.
